Local Civic Power 101

  • March 05, 2026
  • 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Latinx Education Collaborative, 2301 Lexington Ave

This is a hands-on, community-centered learning experience designed to break down how local government works in Kansas City and how everyday people can engage, influence decisions, and explore pathways into civic leadership. This will be practical, conversational, and grounded in real-world experience.

Topics we’ll cover include:

  • Overview of the City of structure
  • What a city councilperson does
  • Standing City Council committees vs. full council: roles, agendas, and decision-making
  • What city boards and commissions do and why they matter
  • Ethics, accountability, and oversight in local government
  • Other local governing bodies, including:
    • School Boards
    • County government

The event will include a short grounding overview, shared dinner, rotating small-group conversations led by facilitators, and a collective close with clear next steps.

Participants will include parents, students, educators, organizers, advocates, and community members who believe civic spaces should reflect the people they serve.
