The first Pendleton Heights Social of 2023 was held at the residence of Jon Cokely and Eva Copeland on St. Patrick's Day, and featured Kat King performing in the foyer. The house show came about after our hosts placed the winning bid during a silent auction, which proved to be delightfully serendipitous. As it turns out, Kat King's keyboardist- Kara LePage- lives in PH so she only had a few blocks to travel to get to the show on time. Small world, right?

PS, Jon and Eva rule, and so does their corned beef & cabbage!

You'd be hard pressed to find a PH neighbor who hasn't volunteered at least once to help with the ongoing evolution of our communal green spaces. Time and energy invested in our Community Garden, Orchard, and Pocket Park has given us so much in return- produce, friendships, and the inspiration to use our green spaces in new ways for years to come.

In an effort to keep costs low for all involved, we've come up with a plan that not only saves money but increases safety and community engagement too. This year, we're asking PH neighbors with community garden bed rentals to creatively step up and volunteer with additional maintenance work in our green spaces. The response so far has been good, but with your help it will be great!

Sunday March 26: Garden Kick Off & Seed Swap in the PH Community Garden at Brooklyn Avenue & Minnie Street. You don't have to rent a garden bed to participate in the seed swap, but if you are renting one, the annual seed swap is an excellent starting point. 10am-12pm

Saturday April 15: Garden Bed Repair Day If you have a hammer, saw, paint, a paint brush and you know how to use any or all of these things, we'd love to have you join us on 4/15. Many hands make light work. 10am-12pm

The Pendleton Heights neighborhood Community Garden season opens with an offering of 18 large beds and 5 small beds for rent.  Visit the phkc.org shop to secure one for yourself. All who rent a bed or volunteer to help with maintenance will be eligible to get a PH Community Garden t-shirt at half price too!

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Whitney Bernardo, John Bordeau, Jon Cokely, Arthur Curiel, Michael Ohlson-Dicus, and Emily Reeves as our newest Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association Board Members. This next iteration of the board will be comprised of insightful veterans (several have served on previous PHNA boards) alongside new board members who have established themselves as leaders in their chosen professions. If you attended the election meeting or viewed it remotely online (Tuesday 11/08), you'll agree with us when we say that each will undoubtedly benefit our neighborhood during their tenure.

We would be remiss if we did not express gratitude for our board members who will officially be vacating their positions on December 31st, 2022. So, jumping right in- Nathanaeli Leno, Patrick McLaughlin, Margarita Friedman, and Jacob & Stephen Knerr- we thank you for your service, and for continually making a positive difference in our community.

Finally, the Pendleton Height Board extends their sincere thanks to all members who participated in this year's election. Your involvement in this process supports the evolution of our enclave and ensures that it remains a great place to live, work and play in for years to come. At the end of the day, it's you who makes our beloved historic district Positively Urban, and Uniquely Eclectic. For this and so much more, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Happy Holidays to all PH neighbors!

The Pendleton Heights Orchard Fest '22 was one for the books. On Sunday October 16th, PH neighbors and friends came out to celebrate another year of successful harvests in our orchard and community garden. Simultaneously we celebrated the new jewel in the PH Orchard's crown: the installation of beehives, and the heavenly honey our bees produced in their first year of residency.

We are still aglow from all the fun, support, and beautiful weather! Many thanks to all that attended, and to the numerous volunteers who worked the event.

The day wouldn't have been half of what it was without the amazing organizations that helped make it happen, and continue to support our efforts year in and year out., On that note, and from the bottom of our hearts-

THANK YOU  to Bee KC, Betty Rae's Ice CreamCore Coffee, Dutch Flowers, Giving Grove, GoEx, Howard's Farm & Kitchen, J. Rieger & Co., KC Canning Co.. KC Community Gardens, KC Water Dept., Parks & Recreation of KCMO, Kansas City University, Lead to Read KC, Mid-America Regional Council, PH Coffee, Ruby Jean's Juicery, Stone Lion Puppet Theatre, Zero Zero Handmade Pasta, Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins, and last but not least, the bees of PH.

Join us on Sunday October 16th as we celebrate the close of 2022's harvest season with some fantastic family oriented fun at the Pendleton Heights Orchard Fest!

The Stone Lion Puppet Theater will perform its show, "Down the Drain" at noon, where we'll learn about the importance of water conservancy in a most entertaining manner. Before and after the show, be sure to carve out time to check out the pumpkin patch, enter to win some excellent raffle prizes, and don't forget to let your kiddos participate in some interactive crafting with Miss Margarita, the original founder of Art Garden KC.

Because Halloween costumes can be costly and children quickly outgrow them, the Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association's Green Spaces Steward, Whitney Blaire, has conjured up a children's costume swap. To participate, bring your gently used costumes to exchange for new or new-to-you ones. Miss Jenn will be on hand to assist with costume selections and to answer any questions you might have, making costume shopping easier than ever. PHNA would like to make this a tradition so monetary donations will be appreciated, though certainly not required.

Lest you think the fun ends at 2pm, think again. You're invited to stick around afterwards for the Chiefs and Bills watch party at PH Coffee (2200 Lexington Ave). There'll be plenty of beer and hotdogs on hand for everyone, with a percentage of proceeds being gifted back to PHNA & PH Green Spaces. Bonus: if you buy a PH t-shirt at the PH Orchard Fest, you'll get a coupon for a free hotdog to enjoy during the game. Such a good deal! PH Coffee features a play area for little ones who may not be able to sit still for the duration of the game, so as you can see, everyone wins on Sunday.

We look forward to seeing you there!

    Love, PH xo

Sunday 7/31: Pendleton Heights celebrated their first ever honey harvest with Bee KC, Howard's Farm, 50+ neighbors and of course their marvelous green spaces steward, Whitney Blaire (photos L to R, courtesy of Sarah Thompson-Lift and Megan Hamer).

Although Bee KC had taken on the important role of overseeing harvesting duties, they also made dreams come true for the many helpful volunteers on hand. Jenn Clark fulfilled her apiarist fantasy by donning the full regalia and performing bee calming duties with the smoke pot. Children not only put on bee suits to handle the bees and screens, some also helped scrape the screens of the precious nectar & beeswax. One of the Hamer children was even granted the privilege of working the centrifuge which separates the honey from the combs, and they did a great job too!

Two neighborhood kiddos were stung by a few errant bees but they bravely soldiered through, thanks in part to loving parents smoothing away tears. The other part of that equation? The delicious treats provided by Howard's Farm, of course! Their homemade honey ice cream and honey basil lemonade made all frowns turn upside down.

The cherry on top of the day came in the form of a most delicious surprise. Those who stayed to the end were rewarded with a jar of honey, fresh from the hive. PH honey is said to be very floral, and some have detected a subtle citrus thread running through to the finish. However one wants to describe it, all can agree that the bees of PH got it right. Their honey is just like the neighborhood they live in: multifaceted, delightfully different, and uniquely sweet.

This coming Sunday, make plans to drop by the Pendleton Heights Community Orchard (Lexington at Montgall Aves), as we'll be harvesting our first batch of honey from the hives that were installed this past spring. We hope there'll be enough for all to sample but if not, rest assured this is more than a honey harvest, it's a family friendly hullabaloo! Bee KC and Howard’s Farm will be on hand to make sure of that with with bee suits, refreshments and more.

So save the date and don't be late. A good time will be had by all!

    Love, PH xo

Join us Saturday, June 25th (9am-12pm) for a community celebration of Kessler Park, hosted by the KCMO Parks Department as part of the Kessler Park Planning Process!

This celebration kicks off in one of our "sister" neighborhoods (Scarritt) at the Colonnade, so it's within walking distance, and is for all HNE residents and their friends (kid friendly too!). Here you'll connect with local neighborhood associations, community partners, and participate in hikes and happenings throughout the park. The cherry on top? A Mobile Music Box featuring the Kansas City Symphony will also be on hand to delight and entertain.

The Kessler Park Plan project aims to improve connections between key nodes of the park and to explore ways to make amenities more accessible to residents. Learn more about the plan here: https://www.kesslerparkplankc.com/
